About your hosts:
Ana and Mariana have been friends since the first grade. They were both raised in Cancun, Mexico and eventually grew up to be artists who now reside in Mexico City.
Ana Victoria Calderรณn has hosted creative retreats around the world focusing on watercolor painting. For her 2020 retreat she is delighted to share the most authentic Mexican experience at one of her favorite places in the world with you: Zoquiapan.
Zoquiapan has been in Mariana Valenzuelaโs family for over a century. This privately owned Hacienda is an extremely special place with a tasteful ambiance in a traditional setting. Mariana and her family are known to be exceptional hosts and this retreat will be carefully catered to our special art group.
We are excited to share this authentic experience with you, which is not accesible through tourist or booking sites. Just hop on a flight to Mexico City and we will take care of the rest!
About Zoquiapan:
Zoquiapan is a traditional Mexican Hacienda founded in 1553, located on the outskirts of Mexico City in the state of Tlaxcala.
The Hacienda has been privately owned by the Valenzuela family since 1910, during this time it was one of the largest Pulque producing Haciendas in the area. Pulque is a traditional beverage made from fermented sap of the maguey plant. This beverage has been produced for millennia in central Mexico and was considered to be an important part of agricultural ceremonies by the Aztecs. This beverage of the gods is currently considered an important part of Mexican history and heritage.
For more than 100 years the Valenzuela family has cared for the Hacienda and conserved national traditions and recipes. The Hacienda no longer produces pulque and now serves as a country side getaway.
The original property deeds were signed by King Philip II of Spain himself.
