Location: Zoquiapan, a traditional 500 year old private agave Hacienda on the outskirts of Mexico City.
All inclusive retreat featuring a week of watercolor painting, mysticism, botanical crafts and self care revolving around an authentic cultural and culinary experience in a tasteful rustic environment. This tastefully curated experience is set in traditional 500 year old private agave Hacienda.
Why Watercolors of Mexico?
I have hosted many retreats around the world (Mariana has joined me on a few of them!) and I have always felt the desire to share this authentic Mexican experience with my watercolor students. Mexico is my home and the type of experience we have planned for you is not something you can experience through typical booking sites. The level of authenticity and a personalization we can offer you by hosting this retreat at a private Hacienda is incomparable. This Hacienda is not open to the public through regular tourism sites, so you are in for a special treat. There is endless inspiration here and I can’t wait to paint with you in this magical place.
How do I get to Zoquiapan?
Book a flight to Mexico City. We will set up two pick up times from the Mexico City International Airport where a private driver will pick you up and whisk you away to our Hacienda. The Hacienda is around one and half hours from the airport, depending on traffic. The closest town is Calculalpan, Tlaxcala.
What will our days be like?
Our days will be a mix of authentic cultural experiences, watercolor painting, crafts and delicious food. For a more detailed look at our program, please visit our schedule page.
What are bedrooms like?
Zoquiapan is a traditional Hacienda with tall ceilings and rustic bedrooms. It is important to note that this is not a luxury retreat, rooms are modest and comfortable. Bathrooms are quite large and shared “casa de campo” style. Some bedrooms have interior fireplaces, although we will not be using them because it will be warm during the summer time! Towels, shampoo, conditioner and soap will be available in each bathroom. If you are booking a private room it is important to note that you might be sharing a large bathroom with the room next to yours.
Which supplies to I need to bring for painting?
You will need you watercolor basics: paints, brushes and paper. Feel free to bring any type of special paint that excited you, one of our favorite part of retreats is sharing and learning about different art supplies from each other. You will receive a packing lost once we are closer to the retreat.
More specific art supplies will be available during our week together, we’ve got you covered.
What level of painting skills do I need to attend this retreat?
This retreat is designed for all skill levels. If you are a super beginner, I do recommend taking at least my Modern Watercolor class online. We will not be going over the super basics here, but diving into watercolor painting for our retreat projects.
Will the classes be in English?
This retreat will be bilingual! All classes and activities will be in English and in Spanish as well.
What will the weather be like?
Weather in the valley of Mexico is mild during summer and spring. Warm days and cool evenings. We will send a detailed packing list to retreat attendees by email.
What will the food be like?
Mariana and I are designing a special menu for this retreat including our favorite Mexican dishes with a healthy twist by adding many vegetarian dishes. We are able to accommodate pretty much any diet including vegan or gluten free. You will be asked about your dietary preferences when you fill out your registration form, please be as specific as possible. We are eager to please all dietary preferences!
What if I have an emergency?
Although the Hacienda is located in the middle of nature, we have many towns that are nearby in case we need to get to a pharmacy quickly. Mexico City is only 1.5 or 2 hours away depending on traffic, all major hospitals, facilities and airports are available in the city. We will have a car on site in case we need to get somewhere quickly.
What if I need to cancel?
Travel insurance is required when you sign up to this retreat. Please make sure you add insurance when booking your flight, or check with your credit card company, for example American Express offers great travel insurance.
